The Czech National Marrow Donor Registry was established in 1992 as one of the activities of the Bone Marrow Transplantation Foundation under the original name of the Central Marrow Donor Registry. The first final version of the entire programme was adopted on 25 April 1992 and a network of 7 donor centres was created within the territory of the Czech Republic. These were willing to cooperate and at the same time to fulfil the necessary criteria of the programme. The Registry commenced recruiting the first donors in this form in September 1992. In 1993 the Registry joined the international cooperation by means of Bone Marrow Donor Worldwide and in 1997 it signed a contract of mutual cooperation with the US National Marrow Donor Programme.
The Registry worked in this form until 1998. For this period it was exclusively financed by the Bone Marrow Transplantation Foundation. In 1998 a new Foundation Act was enacted in the Czech Republic, changing the previous positions of foundations. Due to this change, the Registry had to be separated from the Foundation in the form of an independent legal entity. As of 1 January 1999 the Registry was registered by the Regional Commercial Court in Pilsen as an independent legal entity in the form of a public service company under the name of the Czech National Marrow Donor Registry. The Bone Marrow Transplantation Foundation has retained the support of voluntary hematopoietic stem cells donation as one of its main grant programmes in its statute and has remained to be the principal financial guarantor of the whole programme.
During 2000 contracts were concluded with health insurance companies, which for the first time started paying some costs connected with an active search for the most suitable donors for specific patients and the costs connected with collections of their hematopoietic stem cells. A prevailing part of costs connected with recruitment of new voluntary donors and their HLA examination has remained dependent on the grant programme of the Bone Marrow Transplantation Foundation.
Since 1992 further development has occurred with regard to the increasing number of donor centres, concluding mutual contracts with all transplantation centres in the Czech Republic. Followed by a mutual contract with a JACIE accredited Collection Centre, building a central HLA laboratory of the Registry and obtaining the EFI accreditation.
In March 2005, the Czech National Marrow Donor Registry successfully underwent a benchmark accreditation of the World Marrow Donor Association, the full accreditation was granted after on-site inspection in 2010 and in 2014 again.
